Prof. (Dr.) Luke Chike Igweobi, DNP, MS, APRN, PMHNP-BC, Env. Pol./Int. Dev. (Harvard)
Dr. Luke Chike Igweobi is the Convener and Chancellor of the Eliezer Igweobi Center for Innovation & Sustainability, a project dedicated to advancing sustainable development, community resilience, and human capital transformation across Africa and beyond.
Inspired by the legacy of his late father, Pa Eliezer Igweobi, a respected environmental steward who served with the State Environmental Sanitation Authority in Eastern Nigeria, Dr. Igweobi’s passion for environmental advocacy began early. As an undergraduate, he founded the first climate student club at the University of Lagos, where he graduated with a B.Sc. (Hons) in 2004.
Dr. Igweobi’s commitment to youth mobilization and grassroots development led him to spearhead “Kano Green”, a youth-led environmental movement that organized National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members across Northern Nigeria. He has collaborated with leading global and national institutions—including the Nigerian Federal Ministry of Health, Ministry of Environment, UNICEF, and the British Council—on key health and development initiatives, particularly in the area of maternal/child health, and environment.
A dynamic communicator, he also anchored the “Light of the Nation” television program on NTA Kano, where he engaged a national audience on development issues ranging from climate action to public health.
Since 2004, Dr. Igweobi has led workshops and presented at international conferences and academic institutions such as Columbia University (New York), Yale University (Connecticut), and the Sierra Student Coalition (Harrisburg, PA). His areas of thought leadership include urban and rural development, waste management and recycling, green city initiatives, climate-induced flooding, land degradation, and communal conflict resolution related to land use and governance.
Professionally, Dr. Igweobi is a licensed Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP-BC) and holds a Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) degree with specialization in Population Health Psychiatry. He also earned a Professional Graduate Certificate in Environmental Policy and International Development from Harvard University, Cambridge, Massachusetts.Dr. Igweobi has been involved in international development work and impact in several countries around the world.
In addition to his clinical and development work, Dr. Igweobi has served as an Adjunct Professor of Process Improvement at New England College, Henniker, New Hampshire—where he also earned his Master of Science in Management (Health Administration) in 2009.

Do you know that the discovery of ammonia fertilizer, specifically through the Haber-Bosch process, had a profound impact on global crop production? This breakthrough, which allows for the synthesis of ammonia from atmospheric nitrogen, revolutionized agriculture by significantly boosting crop yields.
It is estimated that if crop yields had remained at their 1900 levels, the crop harvest in the year 2000 would have required nearly four times more cultivated land than was actually used. This means that the use of ammonia fertilizer has dramatically increased agricultural efficiency, reducing the necessary land for cultivation by a substantial margin.
Today, around 50% of the world’s food production relies on the use of ammonia-based fertilizers. The global production of ammonia stands at approximately 180 million tonnes annually, with 88% of this used for fertilizer production. This significant contribution has enabled the world to sustain its growing population, which expanded from 1.6 billion in 1900 to over 7.3 billion today.
